Prayer Concerns for the week of January 21, 2013

Turkey
·         Continue to pray for the children and people of Syria who have fled to Turkey to escape the civil war in their home country. Pray for the estimated 140,000 refugees living in 13 Turkish government-run camps that are now too full to take in any more refugees.
·         Pray for the thousands of Syrian refugees who entered Turkey illegally as they are now unable to go to camps set up for registered refugees and receive humanitarian aid.
·         Give thanks to God for the generosity of Turkish villagers who have taken in refugees from Syria who don’t have access to aid in the camps. Thank God for the villagers of Davutpasa who have taken in about 400 Syrians and provided them with shelter and food. Pray God will provide for the refugee children and their families as their hosts have very little resources themselves. http://tinyurl.com/b2zunt2

United States, Russia
·         Please keep in prayer the Thomas family from Minnesota as they are caught up in a difficult adoption situation. John and Renee have been working on adopting the younger biological brother of their son Jack, but Russia’s new adoption law banning Americans from adopting Russian children has halted the process. Pray for 4-year-old Nikoly who remains in a Russian orphanage and cannot join his brother in the U.S. http://tinyurl.com/anul8g7
·         Pray for the Smith family from Arizona who traveled to Russia to meet a 5-year-old little boy they hoped to adopt. Pray for this little boy who has cerebral palsy and who has been left in limbo by the adoption ban. http://tinyurl.com/blh3v4c
·         Pray for all Russian orphans and the 1,500 U.S. families who are caught up in this adoption ban. Pray for children and adoptive parents who have met and bonded only to be kept from forming “forever families” because of the ban. Pray for the 740,000 children who aren’t in parental custody in Russia and whose prospects for adoption are more uncertain now.
·         Give thanks to God for the courage of the estimated 20,000 Russians who took part in a demonstration to protest the new law banning Americans from adopting Russian children. Opponents of the ban argue it victimizes children in order to make a political point.
·         Pray for a change of heart within the Russian government about this ban that was adopted in retaliation for a new U.S. law that targeted Russians accused of human rights abuses. Russia’s adoption ban was also a result of the focus its leaders placed on the 19 adopted Russian children who died over a 20 year period while in the custody of their American adoptive parents. http://tinyurl.com/ctlftho
·         Give God thanks that an estimated 60,000 Russian children have found “forever homes” with American families over the past two decades.

United States
·         Please pray for children who have type 2 diabetes, a chronic disease in which the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or the cells in the body ignore the insulin. Pray for an end to the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in children. More than a decade ago, pediatricians began seeing a disturbing increase in the number of children with this chronic disease, particularly in minority and low-income children.  http://tinyurl.com/72jkb5z
·         Give thanks to God for the work of Dr. Barbara Linder and the studies she has coordinated that have discovered ways to reduce the risk of children developing type 2 diabetes and the most effective treatment strategies for children and youth with type 2 diabetes.  http://tinyurl.com/bxtwyxa
·         Continue to keep in prayer 16-year-old Andrew and his 12-year-old sister Rachel who both have type 1 diabetes. In people with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas (the organ that produces insulin) is destroyed by auto-antibodies so they must have insulin injections every day. Pray Rachel’s blood sugar levels will even out so she will feel better. Pray for their parents as they provide the day-to-day care this disease requires and deal with the psychological, emotional, and social challenges it presents.  http://tinyurl.com/a8vkde
·         Pray for all children who struggle with type 1 diabetes. Pray for a cure for this disease and give thanks to God for the medical advances being made to help children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes. http://tinyurl.com/9y9rvae

Faces of Children
·         Please pray for Clay, the nephew of a Faces of Children prayer partner, who has a rare genetic disorder called Hunter syndrome and who has been experiencing frequent grand mal seizures. http://tinyurl.com/4px2qx
