Prayer Concerns for the week of August 20, 2012

Cambodia
·         Please continue to keep in prayer the children of Cambodia who have been exposed to a mysterious disease that killed 59 children, many of whom were less than 3 years old, within 24 hours of their hospitalization.
·         Thanks be to God for a possible diagnosis of this mystery disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Cambodian Ministry of Health believe the virus Enterovirus 71 (EV-71), that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), may be responsible for some of the deaths of these children. Pray laboratory tests will find conclusive proof of the cause of this disease. http://tinyurl.com/c6cf9ah   http://tinyurl.com/7gutuqk
·         Pray that WHO and the Cambodian Ministry of Health will be able to educate families and children about how to reduce transmission of this virus through improved hygiene methods. http://tinyurl.com/7myoaej
·         Please pray that God will comfort the families of the 59 children who died from this disease.

Ethiopia
·         Please keep the disabled children receiving treatment at the CURE International Hospital in Ethiopia held close in prayer. Pray especially for Begna, a 6-year-old little boy.  http://cure.org/hospitals/ethiopia/

Ethiopia, Kenya
·         Keep in prayer the estimated half million children and people who are being moved off land in the Lower Omo Valley on which the Ethiopian government plans to establish massive state-run sugar plantations. Pray for those who will lose their farming, fishing, and/or herding livelihoods when they are forced off their land. http://tinyurl.com/7p2d2r2
·         Pray for those in Kenya who will lose their livelihoods when water flow from the Omo River into Kenya’s Lake Turkana is reduced by the completion of the Gibe III hydroelectric dam project. http://tinyurl.com/985r5sn

Iran
·         Please keep the children and people of northwest Iran close in prayer as they deal with the aftereffects of two powerful earthquakes that killed an estimated 300 people and injured 5,000 on August 11, 2012. Pray for those in remote, hard-to-reach villages who have spent the night out in the open following the quakes and lack tents, warm clothing, blankets, food, and drinking water. Pray humanitarian aid will reach this region soon.
·         Pray God will comfort children who are frightened by the aftershocks, 60 of which had already happened in the 24 hours after the quakes. Pray for children who have been injured and/or trapped in the rubble. Pray that medical and rescue help will reach them soon. Pray for those who are grieving the loss of family or parents.
·         Please pray for families who have lost homes and or livelihoods in the 1,000 rural villages around the towns of Ahar, Varzaghan, and Harees. Twenty villages were completely destroyed. http://tinyurl.com/cknr64d

United States
·         Please keep in prayer the victims of a shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in which six worshipers were killed. Pray for those who were injured and the families of those who were killed when an alleged white supremacist entered the temple and began shooting.
·         Give thanks to God for the bravery and quick thinking of 9-year-old Amanat and her 11-year-old brother Abhay who were able to run into the temple and warn more than a dozen people before the shooter entered. Pray that God will comfort these two and all those who were traumatized by the violent experience.  http://tinyurl.com/9h4aufs

Faces of Children
·         Please pray for Grant, the 12-week-old cousin of a Faces of Children prayer partner, as he recovers from open heart surgery to repair a major heart defect. Pray God will bless Grant with healing and a complete recovery. Give thanks that this little one was able to spend six weeks at home before becoming critically ill several weeks ago.
·         Pray for Grant’s parents and 2-year-old sister who are helping to care for him in a children’s hospital that is far from their home. Pray God gives Grant’s parents the stamina and energy for this long-term situation. This is the first of several surgeries Grant will require.
