Prayer Concerns for the week of August 13, 2012

Philippines
·         Please pray for the 850,000 people in the Philippine capital of Manila who have been affected by 11 consecutive days of monsoon rains and heavy flooding. Approximately 60 percent of the city is under water. Pray for those who refuse to leave their homes because they are afraid of losing valuables or livelihoods. Pray for children and families crowded into temporary shelters in which food is in short supply. Pray God will provide aid for all those affected by this terrible flooding. http://tinyurl.com/939ohzy   http://tinyurl.com/8jjtdcd

Syria
·         Continue in prayer for the 1.5 million people of Syria who will need immediate food, crop, and livestock aid as the 17-month-old conflict in their country is preventing farmers from harvesting crops. Pray for the 3 million children and families who will need this support in the coming year because of the continued violence. Pray for peace and stability in this region. http://tinyurl.com/9s4d2ru

United States
·         Give God thanks for the ministry of Family Promise and its Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), a partnership of congregations within a community who help families facing homelessness. Pray for the thousands and thousands of volunteers in the 170 IHN networks across the country who help families regain their housing, independence, and dignity.  http://www.familypromise.org/program/interfaith-hospitality-network
o   Please pray for children and parents enrolled in Family Promise programs around the country. Pray for parents who have just entered the program and struggle to comply with a new or unfamiliar daily routine. Pray for those who slip back into old patterns of behavior and risk being expelled from the program. Pray for parents who are unemployed and seeking jobs.
o   Pray for children in Family Promise programs who struggle with the stigma of being homeless.
·         Pray God will comfort the family of 12-year-old Jordan Lee Hanson who died when he lost control of an ATV (all terrain vehicle) he was driving. The ATV went into a marshy area, flipped over on Jordan and pinned him underwater for more than an hour.  http://tinyurl.com/bllhqlc
o   Pray for Jordan’s friends in this season of sorrow. Pray they might learn from this devastating loss and be attentive to safety rules and instructions regarding ATVs.
o   Pray for the police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and fire and ambulance personnel who responded to this emergency. Pray God will bring peace to those who have been adversely affected by this child’s death.
·         Please pray for children who are neglected or left unsupervised by their parents or caregivers. Pray for a 2-year-old boy whose father left him alone in their apartment to go to a bar and drink. Give thanks that a neighbor alerted police to a crying child and they were able to rescue the little boy.  http://tinyurl.com/cxgh5js

Faces of Children
·         Pray for 11-year-old Cathy* and her father Greg*, cousins of a Faces of Children intercessor, who were seriously injured in a house fire July 24. Give thanks that Cathy’s 16-year-old sister Patty* and their mother Marsha* weren’t injured in the fire that completely destroyed their family home.
·         Pray God will bring healing to Cathy and Greg and protect them from infection and other secondary illnesses. Cathy is in critical condition with burns over 80 percent of her body, but she is making good progress. Greg is also in critical condition with burns over 60 percent of his body and has been heavily sedated. He has extensive lung damage from smoke inhalation.
·         Thanks be to God that Cathy and Greg are in hospitals with excellent burn trauma centers. Pray for the doctors, nurses, and staff at the children’s burn hospital who are treating and caring for Cathy. Pray for Cathy’s mother and sister who are with her and plan to live in the community until Cathy is through with the multiple surgeries and therapy she will require over the next few years.
·         Pray for the burn trauma center physicians, nurses, and hospital staff who are treating Greg. Pray also for the family members and friends caring for Greg while Marsha and Patty are in a different city caring for Cathy.
·         Give God thanks for the help being provided by the community in which this family lived. Pray God will provide the resources this family needs to pay for their medical bills as well as the medical helicopter airlift to two different cities. Pray God will guard their hearts and minds from desperation and will show them a way to start over after losing their home, cars, clothes, and the contents of their home.
