Prayer Concerns for the week of July 23, 2012

Cambodia
·         Please pray God will bring healing to the children of Cambodia who have been exposed to an unknown disease that is proving to be deadly. Pray for families of the 60 children, the majority of whom were under 3 years old, who died within 24 hours of being admitted to the hospital. Children were admitted with high fevers and rapid deterioration of respiratory functions. Pray the World Health Organization and Cambodian Ministry of Health will pinpoint the cause and source of the disease and find an effective treatment for it. http://tinyurl.com/7gutuqk

Kenya
·         Pray for children and families who were at Sunday worship services earlier this month when attackers hurled grenades into the Catholic Church and the African Inland Church in Garissa, a north Kenya town near the border with Somalia, then opened fire with assault rifles.  http://tinyurl.com/82549gz
·         Keep in prayer those who were injured in the simultaneous assaults. Pray for the families of the 17 people killed in the attacks, possibly committed by al Shabaab sympathizers in retaliation for Kenya sending troops into Somalia after al Qaeda-linked insurgents. Pray for peace in this region.
·         Please lift in prayer Evon, who is between 4 and 6 years old and recently was orphaned in the attack on the church in which they were worshipping in Garissa. Evon’s single mother and older sibling were gunned down and killed in the July 1 attack. Pray that God will bring comfort and peace to this little boy who is now staying with an elderly grandmother who is too poor to care for him. Pray God will provide a safe and loving environment for this little one. Pray for the staff and leadership at Naomi’s Village who are investigating the possibility of bringing Evon into this children’s home. http://naomisvillage.com/

North Korea
·         Please continue to lift the children of North Korea in prayer as food supplies are threatened by one of the most severe droughts in 60 years.
·         Pray for children who are helping water crops by hand using bottles and buckets as there are few large-scale irrigation systems in two southern provinces.
·         Please pray that God will provide for the children of this isolated and sanctions-bound country that struggles to feed its people even in good years.  http://tinyurl.com/74jp69o

United States
·         Thanks be to God for an innovative program called Health Leads that operates in urban clinics, emergency rooms, and community health centers and uses volunteer college students to help low income families get connected to local resources they may not have known existed or had difficulty accessing. http://tinyurl.com/7sfevpm
·         Pray for the volunteer college students, many of whom are bound for careers in medicine and related fields, who work closely with doctors, nurses, and social workers to help low income families access basic services.
o   Patients fill out a questionnaire that identifies their unmet needs, then doctors and staff members order “prescriptions” based on that information. Prescriptions might include food, housing assistance, child care, help with utilities or job training, etc. Patients then take the prescriptions to Health Leads where volunteer college students help fill them by connecting patients to services.
·         Pray for the children and families receiving this kind of assistance and give God thanks for the way the medical and social service systems are working together to address all of the needs, both medical and physical, of the patient. Give thanks for this early intervention and the meaningful impact it is having on the health and well-being of low income children and families.
·         Pray for children of low income families who are caught in a “medical revolving door,” whose medical needs aren’t resolved because their physical needs aren’t met. i.e.:  doctors prescribe asthma medicines for children living in cockroach or mold-infested housing, only to have the children end up in the emergency room because their housing conditions weren’t addressed.

Faces of Children
  • Give thanks to God for the new intercessors who recently joined with Faces of Children. Thanks be to God for the opportunity to share the ministry of Faces of Children with so many people at the 2012 Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women in Orlando, Florida.
