Prayer Requests for August 18, 2008

Georgia, Ossetia, Abkhazia

  • Please be in prayer for the nearly 100,000 children, youth and adults that the UN High Commission on Refugees estimates have been driven from their homes by the recent fighting in Georgia. This nation, sandwiched between Russia and Turkey, has been dealing with two breakaway regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, for almost two decades. Both breakaway regions, in which there is a high level of poverty, are loyal to Russia but aren’t recognized internationally. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LC445393.htm, http://www.alertnet.org/db/crisisprofiles/GG_OSS.htm Pray for the quarter of a million people who have been displaced because of the fighting the past 17 years.
  • Pray for children and others who have been traumatized and injured by the recent violence. Pray for those still in hiding and running out of water and food. Pray for those whose homes, schools, and livelihoods have been destroyed. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/UNHCR/58788396740236eeed4c2e3f7f3d529a.htm, http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LB596227.htm
  • Pray for a lasting settlement to this conflict and that all groups would abide by ceasefires. Pray for the peace of Christ to spread like water and for reconciliation between all parties. Pray that the children of Georgia and these breakaway regions might be able to experience childhood as God intended.

  • Give God thanks and praise that 17-year-old Kiran was able to successfully complete several training courses through the Girls-at-Risk Project and is able to support her large family. Kiran, who is deaf and mute, is the eldest child in a family of ten and uses her training to do stitching work in their community.
  • Thanks be to God that Kiran’s parents, who work in a brick kiln and were very concerned about her future, found out about the PEB program and brought her there.
  • Please pray for Kiran’s physical, spiritual and moral wellbeing as she struggles to fit back into this community.

  • Please pray for Peter*, a young boy who was living and thriving in a secure placement until recently. Peter was rescued from a child labor situation and brought to a Homes of Love home. His mother had forced him work to support her. Following a visit with family several weeks ago, Peter’s mother refused to return him to his Homes of Love facility. Pray for Peter’s safety and that his mother won’t exploit him again. Pray that she will allow him to obtain an education and will care for Peter out of genuine love and concern. Pray that she will find employment that will sustain her.
  • Pray for Martha*, a young girl living in one of the Homes of Love facilities who has been hospitalized with severe upper respiratory problems. Please pray for her full recovery. Pray for the home mother who must divide her time and attention between Martha in the hospital and the other children living in the home.
