Prayer Requests for October 19, 2009

Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda

  • Please ask that God will provide for the children and people affected by the severe drought in the eastern part of Africa. Pray for the 23 million east Africans who are being driven towards hunger and poverty by the continuing drought.http://alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L527935.htm

India (Eternal Life Fellowship Society)

  • Pray that God will continue to bless the 239 children at New Life Victory School. Give thanks to God that they are able to receive an education and hope for a better future. Pray for their parents, most of whom are illiterate and very poor. Pray for the 67 children being prepared for primary education through the High Point Loving Community Service. Pray that God will provide the resources necessary for Eternal Life Fellowship Society to continue to serve all of these children and their families through the school and community service center.
  • Please pray for 13-year-old Ramesh who has cared for his three younger siblings since he was 9 years old. Their parents died within six months of one another. Give thanks to God for Ramesh’s willingness to care for his two brothers and sister and his hard work at a tea shop so he can meet their physical needs. Pray that Ramesh and his siblings will accept the invitation to go to New Life Victory School where they may receive an education and the love of Christian caregivers.

Mauritania

  • Please pray for the safety and health of the young girls of Mauritania, a West African country where the practice of leblough—intensive force feeding—is used to prepare girls for marriage. The girls must eat 14,000 to 16,000 calories a day and are often threatened with beatings or forced to eat their own vomit if they become sick. Pray for a change of attitude about this dangerous tradition that considers rolling layers of fat on women sexy.
  • Also pray that the practice of child marriage, another tradition linked to leblough, will cease. Most girls are married off between ages 12 and 14—the added weight makes them appear physically mature when they really are not.http://lifestyle.msn.com/your-life/bigger-picture/articlemc.aspx?cp-documentid=22037280&gt1=32001

Uganda (Watoto Child Care Ministries – www.watoto.com)

  • Thanks be to God for 4-year-old Mark’s* continued improvement and weight gain following surgery to remove a blockage in his esophagus and reconstruct it. Please pray that Mark will continue to heal from this major surgery and thrive in his new home and school in the Watoto children’s village.

United States

  • Give thanks to God that the three children found starving inside a hotel bathroom last July are doing well and living with their grandmother. Praise God that they are gaining weight and receiving counseling. Pray that God will continue to heal the 11-year-old girl and her 10 and 5-year-old half brothers from the abuse and neglect inflicted on them by their mother and her boyfriend. Thanks be to God that their 1-year-old sister was unharmed and that she is living with their grandmother, too. Pray for justice for these children. And as difficult as it may be, please pray for God’s healing presence in the lives of the mother and boyfriend.
  • Give praise to God for the Bridge 2 Success program that pairs at-risk young people with mentors. Thanks be to God that 30 youth are able to spend time hanging out with their mentors, receive tutoring, and share a home cooked meal. Pray that God will provide the resources necessary for this program to continue touching the lives of at-risk youth.

Zimbabwe

  • Please continue to pray for the children and people of Zimbabwe as their country struggles with a challenging economic situation. The Zimbabwean currency is no longer in use, making it difficult to purchase goods.
