Prayer Requests for August 17, 2009

Cambodia, South Asia

  • Give thanks to God for the recent rescue of 20 girls and young women from a brothel run by a former Khmer Rouge officer. Thanks be to God for the work of the local International Justice Mission team, Cambodian police, and the local aftercare partners in helping these young women and girls. Pray that God will bring comfort and healing to these girls and women. Thank God that the people who enslaved them are now in police custody.
And give God praise that seven trafficking victims were also rescued from a brothel in South Asia recently. Pray for their restoration, and for their physical and emotional healing. Pray that the six people who enslaved these women and girls will be brought to justice. (International Justice Mission – http://www.ijminstitute.org/)

Philippines

  • Please keep 12-year-old Ellie, 10-year-old Douglas, 8-year-old Patrick, and their parents in prayer as they return to the Philippines following summer furlough. The family is entering its third year serving in the Philippines. Pray for the parents as they go back to teach at a school for missionary children. Pray for the new students and their families who will begin school this term—that they would feel welcomed and find friends.

Saudi Arabia

  • Pray for 5-year-old Nuha and her 3-year-old brother Suleiman who are victims of a power struggle caused by relatives of their mother Fatima. At the request of Fatima’s half brothers, a Saudi judge has ordered Nuha’s parents to divorce on the grounds that she married a man from an inferior background.
  • Pray for Nuha’s father Mansour who is wanted by the Saudi government and is unable to work. Pray that God will give him strength to continue to care for his daughter.
  • Pray for Fatima and Suleiman who were forced to live in an orphanage since a woman may not live on her own in Saudi Arabia. Pray for Nuha who misses her mother desperately and is deeply traumatized.
  • Pray for justice for this family and that Fatima and Mansour may be reunited.

United States

  • Pray for children, teachers, and administrators returning to school soon. Pray for families that struggle to provide clothing, fees, and school supplies each year.
  • Please pray for students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as they readjust to school routines. Many of these students don’t take medications for ADD or ADHD during the summer but must go back on them to attend school. Pray for those who are having problems adjusting to their medications, especially for 10-year-old Dallas. Pray for teachers who work with ADD or ADHD diagnosed students.
  • Please continue to lift 6-year-old Diana* and 1-year-old brother, Brian* in prayer as their permanent placement will soon be resolved. Pray that the judge in their case will clearly discern God’s will for these traumatized children. Please pray that they will be placed in a stable, safe, and loving environment. Pray for their foster mom who very much wants to adopt Diana and Brian and is anxiously awaiting the court’s decision. Pray for God’s healing mercies for the children’s biological mother who has a history of mental illness and substance abuse.
  • Give thanks to God for 70-year-old Jean’s vision and passion to help the “babies of babies” and its successful realization in the establishment of the Lighthouse Day Care Ministry in Indiana. Pray for the work of the staff and volunteers and that God will continue to grow and sustain this ministry for teen parents and their children. Pray for the little ones who come to the day care center each week and for their young parents. And pray that Rebecca might find a way to finish her last semester of high school. Pray that the cycle of babies having babies might be broken through ministries like Lighthouse. http://lighthouse.ligpres.org/

Faces of Children

  • Give thanks to God for the children of First Presbyterian Church’s (Sylacauga, Alabama) Praise Kids choir and their prayers for the children of the world. Pray that they will continue to remember children and feel empowered to help God’s kingdom through their prayers.
